Company Profile:

History:

In 1889, mechanic Wilhelm Heidenhain founded a metal etching shop in Berlin.
In 1923, Dr. Johannes Heidenhain joined his father’s company.
1928 The first major step:HEIDENHAIN developed the lead sulfide copying process (METALLUR), which for the first time enabled the exact reproduction of an original scale.
In 1948, Dr. Johannes Heidenhain started anew in Traunreut.
1950 A pioneering achievement: The DIADUR process—extremely durable precision graduations can be produced using the copying method.
In 1952 , optical position measuring deviceswere added to the product line.
In 1961, the first photoelectrically scanned linear and angular measuring devices were manufactured.
1968 The dawn of the “Electronic Age”: Numerical position displays simplified the operation of conventional machine tools.
1976 HEIDENHAIN builds the first numerical controls for machine tools.
1987 The development of the interferometric measurement principle enables measurement resolutions down to 1 nanometer.

Today:

  • With its plain-language programming, the TNC control system has become the standard in tool and mold making in Europe.
  • A complete line of absolute and incremental encoders, as well as linear and angular measuring devices, is available.
  • There are approximately 3 million encoders and angle measurement devices worldwide,
  • more than 2.5 million length measuring devices,
  • 360,000 item listings and more than
  • 130,000 TNC controls in use.
  • The HEIDENHAIN Group employs approximately 5,500 people worldwide, more than 2,200 of whom work at the main plant in Traunreut.
