Goal
The efficient networking of devices, automated systems, and processes provides decisive competitive advantages in the increasingly competitive laboratory market. This applies to both users of analytical and laboratory equipment and their manufacturers.
According to a McKinsey study, digitization and automation in quality laboratories can reduce costs by up to 50% and lead times by up to 70%.
Several SPECTARIS members from the fields of analytical, bio, and laboratory technology have joined forces with end users to tackle this challenge. The goal of the SPECTARIS working group on “Networked Laboratory Equipment” is to create a cross-vendor, open standard that comprehensively reflects the various industries and their business processes, is sustainable, and also meets future requirements for digitalization and automation.

Lab 4.0 – Challenges
Today's laboratory infrastructures consist of many highly specialized devices from a wide variety of manufacturers. Different interfaces and data formats make it difficult to network these devices with one another and integrate them into existing IT infrastructures. However, this is the most important prerequisite for end-to-end digitization and efficient automation. Currently, there is no comprehensive, efficient, and robust solution for this!
OPC UA has become widely adopted worldwide in recent years, particularly in industrial automation and the process industry. Thanks to its widespread use, OPC UA is well-defined, highly adaptable, field-proven, and continuously evolving. The laboratory market, too, is increasingly aligning itself with industrial automation and its solution approaches. The associated advantages were identified by the SPECTARIS working group “Networked Laboratory Devices” and led to the decision to use OPC UA as the base technology for networking devices, systems, and processes in the laboratory. This not only enables networking within the laboratory but also facilitates integration with traditional industrial infrastructure.
