Company Profile:
The highest standards for materials and their surfaces come from a wide variety of sectors and industries, such as aviation and the automotive industry. However, the data, knowledge, and information regarding how the material changes over the course of its use (its “life cycle”) are also critical factors for its functionality.
5micron GmbH is a young company that has been based in Berlin-Adlershof since January 2015. The seven-person team currently develops optical measurement methods and systems primarily for unusual applications such as:
- High-precision measurements on large or distant objects
- Geometric Measurement of Inaccessible Surfaces
- Geometric Surveying in Harsh Environmental Conditions
Portfolio:
The current portfolio of 5micron GmbH is divided into two business areas:
1. Surface measurement technology 2. Specialized lighting systems
In the field of surface metrology, development projects based on optical methods are carried out primarily for customers in the aerospace industry. These methods are:
- Deflectometry (geometric measurements (dimensions such as length, torsion, roughness, etc.)). Resolution: 50 µm
- Shadow projection method (defect inspection (GO/NO decision)). Resolution: 20 µm
- Pattern projection (analysis of surface structure/topography) Resolution: 5 µm
- Dark-field method (surface analysis)
Since September 2017, a measurement system developed by 5micron GmbH has been flying on an Airbus A340: It is part of the “flying laboratory” for studying laminar flow. It measures the aircraft’s wing surfaces during flight from a distance of 10 meters and specifically monitors changes with an accuracy of a few micrometers. Another example of a miniaturized measurement system was developed for an engine manufacturer, where the measurement technology was designed for minimally invasive engine inspections using an endoscope with a resolution of 5 µm.
In the specialty lighting systems business unit, a 2D positioning sensor supported by data transmission via (IR) light pulses was implemented for a customer in the e-mobility sector. This technology enables communication and interaction between objects in the Internet of Things or in automated and autonomous driving in road traffic.
