"Rock Your Education in Photonics" Initiative Enters Its Second Year: Growth Rates of Up to 50 PercentIn the summer of 2022, SPECTARIS launched an apprenticeship campaign under the slogan “Photon – Rock Your Apprenticeship in Photonics” to attract young talent to the laser and high-tech optics industry. Through social media channels, young people are directed to the landing page www.photonik-ausbildung.de. There, they can find comprehensive information about the photonics industry and the wide range of apprenticeship programs available to them. The focus is on careers such as precision optician, mechatronics technician, and electronics technician. In authentic selfie videos, apprentices provide insights into their daily training routines, making it easier for others to enter the exciting world of photonics. Of particular note is the “Apprenticeship Finder” on the information page. With just a few clicks, users can search for specific apprenticeship opportunities by region. These are directly linked to the companies’ websites, allowing interested individuals to access all relevant information about their desired apprenticeship and apply directly. |

Funding for Projects on “Clinical Validation of Innovative Medical Technology Solutions”: New GuidelinesOn July 19, 2024, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) published a new funding guideline for projects on the “Clinical Validation of Innovative Medical Technology Solutions.” This funding guideline aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the clinical validation of medical technology innovations. Against the backdrop of new regulatory frameworks, the program seeks to foster the development of relevant expertise within these companies. The goal is to accelerate the transition of innovations into clinical practice and to minimize the risk of late-stage failure in research and development investments. |

German Future Prize – Call for Nominations for the 2025 Award Ceremony Now OpenThe Federal President’s German Future Prize for Technology and Innovation will be awarded again in 2025. From now until the end of December 2024, nominations for outstanding innovations that enrich science, business, and society may be submitted through one of 20 eligible nominating institutions. These nominations should include a description of the technical, engineering, or scientific achievement—or the software- or algorithm-based innovation—including its economic and societal significance, a concrete presentation of the significant achievement, and information regarding the nominator’s scientific and technical reputation. Final nominations must be forwarded to the German Future Prize Secretariat by January 31, 2025. The nominated innovations will be announced in September 2025. The award ceremony will take place in Berlin in late November/early December. The Research Association for Precision Mechanics, Optics, and Medical Technology (F.O.M.), which was founded as an offshoot of SPECTARIS, will also apply for the 2025 Future Prize with its successfully completed, pre-competitive research project “Needle-Shaped Lensless Holographic Endoscope” (HoloScope). The innovative, flexible endoscope with a very small diameter developed as part of the project opens up groundbreaking possibilities for detailed imaging in hard-to-reach areas of the body. For example, this lensless endoscope could be used for minimally invasive procedures, such as those performed on the brain, which would greatly improve diagnosis and subsequent treatment options for affected patients. Further information can be found in the call for entries guidelines and on the German Future Prize website. |
